The amount of snobbery regarding drinking establishments on this board is staggering! I enjoy visiting all types of pub and bar but the hipster beer police seem to think that they invented IPA and dark!

Give it a rest, beer bores. Young fogeyism is a social dead end. Most of you snobby types probably spend the majority of your time, while out drinking, Instagramming your followers in a deathly dull social media echo chamber of photos of beards, tattoos and pangenderism! Get your snouts out of your devices and get pissed and dance ffs. You are more boring than my grandmother - and I'm a grandfather myself.

Think I'm a bit old to be a hipster(!) and will be glad for the beard trend to finish, partly because I can't recognise anyone any more.

Don't much care for "craft ales" and also find "real ales bores" tiresome.

However, I find uniformity more tiresome. Go to your cloned bar and drink Carling in some loud-music ghetto of a pub if you like. I care not, as long as there's also a few quiet, comfortable havens where you can hear yourself think, for old codgers like me.

Umm I like quiet traditional pubs with no raucousness. Of which there are very few in the city centre. The Napier in Canton - which can be raucous at times - is where I had my Christmas drink last night, enjoying a few games of darts. I like the Canton too and despite the fact that it is full of cokeheads I do frequent the Robin Hood. But I’m not prejudiced against people or places simply because I don’t fit their demographic or marketing approach.

If we're on to Canton pubs - I'd put the Romilly top and I quite like St Canna's Ale House - despite the beards! I guess the closest thing to a traditional pub in the city centre if the Blue Bell / Goat Major. I still wish they hadn't done that stupid name change though.

There were plans at one point for the Parc Lane fish bar on Queen Street to take over the former Park Vaults site behind and convert it to a similar style pub as before, but also allowing it to serve sit down, plated fish and chips during the daytime.

I think they got as far as getting the licence to do it but things fell through when the ownership of the various betting shops consolidated and so it was sold off quickly to BetFred as part of a wider sale.

Neither am I, not seen any suggestion by anyone else either. That doesn't mean there's no reason to get irritated when one of the few favourite town centre spots you have disappears and joins the raucous collective does it?

If we're talking quiet pubs, 33 Windsor Place is a great spot. Always pretty quiet. Not even too busy on match days, though sadly just within the "plastic glasses" exclusion zone.

I walked down Charles St on Thursday and saw that my beloved Club X is now a sandwich bar. I must have been to X five hundred times and had some of the best times of my life in there. But its replacement didn’t irritate me as I’m not a grumpy old man (yet).

There is prejudice against lager/sports bars and it stems from Camra being run by hippies and intellectuals since the 70s. Today’s craft ale hipsters are those Camra guys’ bastard sons. Whereas us “bitter drinkers” as we liked to be known were modest about our Good Pub Guide haunts, contemporary ale quaffers wear their trendy beer credentials as badges not just of pride but also of one-upmanship.

I remember getting hammered on 9%abv Roger and Out, at the Frog and Parrot in Sheffield, and even more hammered on bitty, smoky scrumpy in some biker pub in Leeds, both in 1989. But I didn’t brag about it.There were real men in those days, giants who could handle their drink, not like the namby pamby socal media bores who must document and disseminate every purchase, be it Bass or Belfort. Yes, we get it, you are a uniquely trendy individual and your limited edition Christmas Pudding Porter clearly makes you trendier than anyone else - especially those Carling-drinking oiks in the sports bar.

What rubbish! You're presumably not irritated by the demise of ClubX because you haven't actually visited there for years. You can't compare this with people who naturally lament the loss of their local meeting and socialising spot, that they're still visiting.

I'm also bitter drinker, I don't "do" craft ales (or anything that has that weird tang of new carpets about it!). You find somewhere quiet in the city centre that caters for that, there's very little choice and it's diminishing.

I'm not part of the Real Ale lobby, craft ales, sports bars, social media bores, clubbing scene, etc. But I don't begrudge people who prefer that - there's room for everyone. You're actually sounding pretty judgmental and more like a beer snob than anyone.

I haven’t been to Club X because it closed about 4 years ago. I was there on one of the last nights.

I like some craft ales, some lagers and some bitters. I like most pubs and bars. My rants were lampooning the forumers who were decrying sports bars and lager drinkers merely for being sports bars and lager drinkers.

To take the analogy further, if I were to lament the loss of Club X (and Exit, opposite) in the manner of the snobs on this board I would write:

“I walked down Charles st and saw that Club X has been replaced by a poncy sandwich bar! And Exit has gone too! That means that in the city centre there are only sanitised gay bars with little of the seediness and thrill that I am used to. Where am I going to meet like-minded ravers and swingers now? All that remain in town are ghastly neon-lit LGBTQ etc pop palaces full of young airheaded empty vessels prancing around to Bruno Mars while downing jaegerbombs! I hate Pulse!”

See....prejudiced and snobby. And by the way I have a very bushy beard.

You're mistaken Re: Club X. The sandwich bar is at the bottom of the block built on the land next door to Club X.

Quite a bit of the old Front Room of Club X became Eagle Bar a few years before X closed. The rest of it eventually became apartments (and the club was a former shadow of itself by that stage).

I went into Eagle in 2012. Not my kind of place as there were no women allowed. The point i was making still stands. My favourite club has closed and been replaced by a bear and otter bar but I didn't come on this forum whinging about hairy men and their tastes ruining my night out.
