Central Square

Under the last revamp plans for Cardiff Central there was a tower there, but it came under Network Rail, not Central Square. You know how plans change though...

Wasn't that south of Central Station though? So part of what is now Central Quay. I might be wrong, but always thought that's where that tower was...basically Network Rail under their revamp plans building a multi-storey and a tower on top of what is currently the surface car park.

I've removed the pic from the header 'pic of the day' (ok it's been of the month or more recently but I'm going to update more regularly now ) but I'm re-posting it here for reference!

Looking at that picture it's turned out alright hasn't it overall, and by Cardiff's standards all been developed pretty quick.

It would be really nice to see some plans for the plot next to HMRC at some point in the next year or two so that the whole project is completed before they do too much south of the station at Central Quay. Another office would fit nicely next to HMRC, or maybe a hotel. You'd think a hotel would do decent trade there.

Now that's it's almost finished I'm a bit less convinced by Number 2 for some reason. Number 1 is still my favourite building out of the bunch.

Awh man hate to say this is all a wasted opportunity. Should have been , ( IMHO ) few but taller buildings around the sides and a central square where the BBC is. Just seams like a total mess and waste of space.
This type of grouping works in central London because there are lots of smaller buildings jammed in in-between to create interest and ground level amenity.

The problem with your proposal is that square would be too big and feel dead and empty. There’s an awful lot of land there. People would have no reason to go there given the pull of St David’s, The Hayes, Bute Park, etc. There’s still a decent amount of space between the BBC building and the station.

Thats what squares are, big empty spaces ! if it it was built up all around the square with shops bars and offices and the train station there would be plenty of reason to be there.
Stepping out of the main train station into a large square with impressive buildings all around is much more friendly than stepping out straight into some random office blocks.

Don’t forget, there is a public square on part of St David’s house
For me, I wouldn’t want a public square as I work out of a train station. I love seeing the BBC building and it’s roof. I’m excited for when these buildings are occupied and there being is a real buzz of people as you exit the station. This gives a better image of Cardiff for visitors

I think the whole area is desperately in need of some more tall buildings - that might just be because I live in the middle of downtown Vancouver where 30+ storey buildings are everywhere.

I think another tall building would help tie the whole area together.

I wish they'd gone taller with the bus interchange tower. Do we know how tall it'll be?

Looks like your wish is their command, new pics on WOL including this one of the apartment block on Wood Street. I’m not sure about it’s relationship with The Prince of Wales and the BBC building though, very different height.

Looks great from that angle, as long as they keep the top bit.
I think the difference in height is great, would be bland if smaller.

It also suggests a semi-tall tower for the last plot of Central Square.
