They're not happy in Brizzle

PostWed Jun 13, 2018 1:12 pm

"According to the STR data for the year-to-date occupancy levels, Bristol hotels are behind on occupancy compared to last year’s business levels. And let’s not forget that in the city centre alone, there has been nine restaurants that have closed their doors already since the beginning of the year, including big names like Jamie’s Italian.

“We can only see this situation getting worse. Furthermore, with Cardiff City FC gaining promotion to the football premiership and flights now coming in direct from Qatar to Cardiff airport means the Welsh capital’s status on the world stage is going to increase further.

Another article from last October, where a Conservative councillor mentioned Bristol was "embarrassed" at Cardiff announcing a second arena.

Only one of these will be built, it's a race. I remember reading another article mentioning key hotel chains only opened up in the city centre of Bristol due to the promises of a key 12,000 seat arena.

Selfishly, I hope Cardiff Council gets a move on!

It also looks more and more like their new Arena will be built in Filton, rather than Temple Meads. The increase of £33m doesn't make it look good for the Temple Meads site

Selfishly, I hope they choose Filton, because transport will be such a nightmare there, compared to our well located proposal. And maybe, they'll just keep arguing about it and never build it.

Seems like a lot of envy from the other side of the bridge. Envy of CCFC promotion and Qatar Airways? They have two football teams and Bristol Airport is a major hub for Easyjet & Ryanair. Never thought I would say this but kudos must go to the Assembly for the Qatar Airways deal. I thought Rhoose would be a shambles when they took over.

I recently read this article on removing the Severn bridge tolls, which is in a very similar vein.

The Bristol Posts quotes SusCom as saying that removing the tolls will stimulate the “South Wales economy at the expense of the West of England economy”.
