Seeing as we are discussing Bristol hotels picking up scraps...

I guess this has been made more viable by the conference centre going up at Celtic Manor?

I wonder if between the conference centre and the new arena if we'll see a few more hotels go up in the city region?

Interesting that the A grade office space is already under offer to a single company, who would that be?

I'd imagine the prospect of additional people coming in with the ICC is definitely behind this one, especially at a 4* rating (as the Celtic Manor itself will cater for the high flyers). When the arena is fully confirmed I wouldn't be surprised to see a small rise in hotel rooms in the city either.

That sort of depends on how you draw the boundaries.

The city of Bristol itself has a poulation of around 460,000 while the total urban area (as defined by the ONS) is 724,000. The equivalent figures for Cardiff are 335,000 and 477,000 (2011 figures).

However the total population of the the Cardiff city region is 1.5m compared to the 1.2m who live in the West of England combined authority area. To my mind the larger regions are more relevant when assesing the viability of developments like arenas.

I knew the Cardiff Capital region was around the 1.5m mark, but I had no idea it was greater than Bristol. Qatar Airways clearly had access to that information :D

If it is the case that either Bristol or Cardiff will have an arena, then this article gives me a little hope

Interesting that Ed Sheeran hinted at the need for an arena in Cardiff at last night's concert. I wonder if someone suggested he say something?

"I have a deep love for Wales. I've come here and played a lot of shows, written a lot of songs here and always have tremendous amounts of fun.

"I had a gig at 18-years-old when I wasn't that popular and I do find it nuts that we're playing four nights at this stadium. I find it surreal. This venue has been on my bucket list to play because when you come to play in Wales, you play the student union and the Motorpoint and there's a big gap after that.

Anyone have any news on how things are progressing with it? Is it still at a stage where the council have to agree to move from Atlantic Wharf and find a new office before anything else happens?

This arena would mean that we have all bases covered! The Principality stadium is having another great year! and it seems quite likely that we may have another global interest boxing match here in sept/oct - whoever pushed for a roof on our stadium take a bow!! Regarding the arena - even though Cardiff has a lot! it sure is missing that size of venue, I wonder when we'll hear more on it?

Interesting, it's not looking good for Bristol. I also agree, bias aside, moving it out of the city centre down be a death warrant for Bristol. At least for us here, in Cardiff Bay, although it would take some footfall from the city centre, it would remain the majority as most people would be coming through Central or Queen Street.

Last Saturday I was in Bristol and coming out of the Mercure was loads of people with Rolling Stones merch bags.

Cardiff painfully lags behind Bristol in the number of smaller venues suitable for indie bands, though I admit that's probably a niche interest.

Bristol's Bierkeller closed earlier this year, where I enjoyed many a gig :( https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bris ... ed-1194469
Surrey Vaults also closed late last year https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/whats-on/ ... aks-840118

It's not rosy on the Bristol music scene at all sadly :(

With the Tramshed doing a decent trade and Womanby Street saved, I don't think we are too far behind Bristol now in the smaller venue stakes.

I've been reading a couple articles on the Bristol Post this week regarding the arena and it is looking more and more likely Bristol's new arena will get built in Filton rather than the city centre, which would be very foolish IMO
