This has all but fallen through now.

No tower - instead they're just going to invest in converting the shop units into restaurants, plus bowling alley in the basement (former Index). Essentially it will become a Red Dragon Centre for the city centre.

Is it possible that the 30 storey tower proposal story was a wind up? It doesn't half seem a bit impractical.

That's essentially what was planned minus the tower, is a bit uninspiring though. Is there still a plan to put an entrance opposite Queen St station? The centre's main issue is a lack of thoroughfare.

The shopping center needs to be knocked down and started again, i just cant see much of a return on any development that would increase its offering and would only improve the layout. It definitely needs to address the thoroughfare between it and Queen street station and the dead frontages facing most of its surroundings.

The centre is in desperate need of a makeover. It's too bland

So we're almost at the end of the year and there has been no reveal of any plans and the Capitol still sits practically empty. Does the rent that New River receive cover their costs? What's happened to the redevelopment?

Most of the new tenants are there on a one month notice basis. To clutch at straws, that suggests they're still looking towards the future, whatever that may be.

Apparently a B&M bargains-style shop is to pop up in the defunct Poundworld unit. I've heard it'll be part of the only5pounds chain. So that's progress I guess. Or just inflation?

The easygym expansion previously planned is on ice due to that company's takeover by The Gym Group. easygym is expected to refurbish shortly and reopen as The Gym.

After reading this:

"More than 200 UK shopping centres are in danger of falling into administration, experts are warning."
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-45707529

you have to wonder whether that's what it will take to put it out of its misery.

Although quite what that would mean for the gym, Tesco and Pulse, all which still do a roaring trade, is another thing.

I say stuff the Capitol full of swingers clubs, S&M dungeons and Chinese and Indian restaurants. Bit of a niche demographic but I for one love having a Chinese for lunch, getting heavily flogged in the afternoon, settling down to a Vindaloo around 7pm followed by a session of swinging.

I popped into the Capitol Centre today for the first time in a while and was surprised to see that most of the smaller vacant units have been let, mainly to locally owned eateries and specialist retailers. The big units at the Station Tce end are still empty. I'm guessing the landlords have been offering short trem lets to local companies at resonable rents.
