Very much re-invigorating the Cardiff Bay appeal. Then there's the future of the motorpoint arena or probably the plot - can't think what the existing structure could be used as (could it be expanded in some way to be specifically a conference venue - maybe not). Hopefully 2 reasons to be cheerful! Let's hope we get significant progress on this next year - what's the latest on Bristols arena ambitions? They'll be loving this over the channel!!
The Motorpoint structure is in dire need of repair. I'm pretty sure the new convention centre in Newport was built with some condition that Cardiff wouldn't compete with it, Welsh Government are paying for half of it after all. If built at the whole 15,000 seats it would become one of the biggest arenas in the UK, bigger than any offering in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Only the O2 in London, Manchester Arena and the NIA in Birmingham would have a bigger capacity. This would be sure to attract the biggest touring acts to Cardiff, bringing in crowds from all over the country.
Personally, for me, the whole Motorpoint building needs to go. BUT, I would like a smaller 3-4k size venue to replace it to act as a medium sized venue between the new arena and the Tramshed / St.Davids Hall / Uni, much like the O2 Academy in Bristol. I think combined with the NCP this plot could be a great mixed use development of office, hotel, new 3-4k venue etc. Maybe even one of the university's would be interested in this land? It's prime that's for sure!
The Bristol Mayor came out recently and confirmed the arena would NOT be going ahead next to Temple Meads. I believe they're now pressing ahead for it to be built at the Filton Airfield. I can't see both happening, if they manage to submit a planning application by July 2019 I would raise doubts over the future of the Bristol Arena.
