This in place of the building that housed Track 2000 on the corner of Penarth Road and Taffs Mead Embankment - as a local I'm very pleased if this is what we get! Read all About it!! here... http://www.bottleworkswharfcardiff.com/

Not nice, is my first reaction

It's not 'the building that housed Track 2000'. It's the former Whitbread bottling works, hence the name. It has a fascinating and important history. A very sad loss if it goes and the proposed replacement is shite!

Well actually it is the building that housed Track 2000 well for the last 20 years or so but nevertheles that's a fair comment that it has a history but what would be the best use of the existing building in your opinion? It's kind've just around the corner from where I live and presently at night a regular spot for prostitutes. With the plans just across the river for the central quay development surely something needs to be done with it - genuine question what? If the proposed plans proceed it will eradicate present day anti social problems. A shame to lose history but to keep it unoccupied doesn't seem to be an option, so as someone who walks past it pretty much on a daily basis I welcome this change. However if it could be actively utilized as it is, then maybe I could be very happy with that also, but not sure how that's going to happen. Maybe if the very successful Tramshed wasn't just around the corner that may have been a possibility?

It is a huge improvement on the current building, regardless of the history.

It might have some interest for industrial heritage but that existing building has very little architectural merit. The new building is a bit of faux history - Cardiff doesn't really have a history of that sort of warehouse/industrial building. But its a decent addition and will suit its surroundings (even if our view of suitability is driven by building styles elsewhere).

One of the issues with Cardiff's history is that our industrial buildings aren't that attractive or convertible, in general. The warehouses of Liverpool Docks, London docks, and the old mills of Manchester, could be converted into hotels, offices, apartments. Cardiff's history as a coal port meant we had far fewer warehouses - you can hapilly leave coal in the open, in a way you can't for foodstuffs, wool/cotton/textiles/clothing, furniture, china, etc. And the main industrial activity in Cardiff itself developed later (when more utilitarian buildings were built) and was largely heavy industry (e.g. steel) which requires buildings unsuitable for conversion to non-industrial uses.

Didn't this use to be a Cheese warehouse, or something similar, prior to Track 2000 taking the building?

Confused by them calling the development Bottle Works Wharf as I don't think there was ever a wharf, i.e. a place where ships or barges tied up to load or unload cargo there but I could be wrong!

You're right, there was never a wharf. Beer was brought in by rail to be bottled locally. From memory, I think it was Dairy Crest who were there after Whitbread.

The site is pretty much flattened now. That didn't take long!
