The commuter route sounds ideal. But all the talk you hear is about trains going to London. If it is privately financed how is the company going to get its money back? By charging the train companies to stop there? I'm not familiar with how these things work.

Presumably a lot of the profit comes from capturing the land value of the surrounding development sites but, like you, I'm no expert. It could be that they believe that providing the station with make planning approval for the overall scheme more likely.

Looks like smart ticketing is on the way...

Build it and they will come.
Get it wrong and they will fall off.

Apart from "somewhere in St. Mellons", do we know where exactly plans are to site this?

Hendre Lake is on the southeastern edge of St Mellon's - it's the first point at which the railway enters the urban area of Cardiff.

I think they get their money back from the increase in land value by having a station that connects to London, Bristol and Cardiff. Property value in South East England is closely linked to ease of access to central London, obviously not the only driver though. The same effect is probably found around the UK in the form of how easy it is to get to nearest big city, in this case ready access to three cities must make offices more attractive (expensive).
