The Interchange

PostTue Feb 25, 2020 7:02 pm

It's about time this development had its own thread!!

Bus Station - Apartments (up to 83m) - Offices (up to 48m)

I enquired today at the site, about when the crane was going to be constructed. Apparently that was originally planned for last weekend but the weather or specifically the wind made that a non-starter. So maybe this weekend? if not windy. Mind you if it's dependent on a wind free day it could be kind of july/august!! Anyway chuffed to hear it's imminent. Oh and the crane count for the site will apparently be 3.

If anyone’s in town, there’s a decent view of the site from the window next to the upstairs bar in the Prince of Wales.

It's only when you see it next to the BBC that you realise just how big this development is. You should be able to clearly see the offices over the Travelodge etc walking down Mill Lane. This will transform the area.

I agree. That area of the city has bulked up loads on the Skyline and this will help no end, especially with the tower.
Even the HMRC building as a mid-rise has made an impact.

When you think that the lower end of this development is 48m (only 8m shorter than HMRC) then as it starts going up I think we are going to continually be surprised at the massive size of this development! I wonder if it will be constructed with a steel frame as the HMRC and BBC were, or the more concrete affair, as per Premier Inn, Customhouse St. (please some one wise me up to the names of these two methods of construction   ) If it's the 'meccano' or steel style, then maybe by later this year it's overall bulk will be in place?

I don't know if this is in any way related to tower crane activity but Western Lane is now shut of as a pedestrian walkway with gates both end. I wonder if the weather for tomorrow is good for crane assembly?

Any update. Thoughts on the cranes going up. The weather cleared up a little the other day as well?

So the 1st of I believe 3 tower cranes is going up this weekend - presumably the tallest of the 3 and I haven't see bases for the other two appear yet. The one being constructed is for the residential tower and perhaps this will be Cardiff's tallest ever crane as it will be assisting in the construction of what will be the tallest building in the city at 84metres. I'm wondering if construction will be ramped up next week with this pretty pricey bit of kit on-board? In these very uncertain times it will be great to see this newly constructed crane proceeding with work on this development which is very much required. Whilst getting back to normal in the city centre (and life generally) is almost definitely going to take a year or more - there will be post pandemic normality, I'm hoping this city can start recovering (when safe to do so) and return to former glory and more! :)
