That whole block under Jury's has lost a lot of tenants in quick succession. Off the top of my head I think there's only Carphone Warehouse left now and I can't see that lasting much longer.

Cornish Bakehouse are relocating from Church Street to Queen Street. They have submitted a planning application for the unit previously occupied by Ollie Quinn (beneath Jury's Inn).

Burger king have applied to open a new restaurant in the closed William Hill on St Mary's Street. Makes sense as they have lost two outlets in the city centre in recent years.

Something called Taco Bell has opened on St Marys St. Big queues outside yesterday.

Bit of internet search tells me it's a well known American brand. Don't really know what the fuss is with that but I do like to claim I was one of the first people in the UK to eat in Subway.

'Something called'

They are a big company internationally Frank, so people are excited to have them in the city just like they were with Krispy Kreme, Shake Shack etc.

There's quite a few US chains we don't have at home that are elsewhere in the world, not sure if it's just that they are in London and haven't expanded to Wales and maybe not other major UK cities yet or they haven't tried the UK yet? I've not been regular enough in the centre of London to notice over the last few years.

There's certainly loads of US brands here in the UAE just as if it's an American City. They love US junk food and other popular American brands here.

I'm not sure why people get SO excited though. I can understand really looking forward to something coming that you've had while living somewhere else or being on holiday, but the queuing for hours stuff baffles me.

I have fond memories of Taco Bell from my sudent days doing my sandwhich year in Uxbridge. Most lunchtimes

My memory of Taco Bell from Texas is squidgy unappetising "ground beef" between overly crunchy taco shells. Two textural wrongs don't make a right.

I was talking to my dad about this. Its absolutely ridiculous that people will queue so long for anything so mundane. Its like the 'charms' at Pandora.

I could just about understand the queues for Welsh themed lego though. But lego is something that lasts years - and a lifetime if your parents don't sell it without telling you! Taco bell - from my experience, you're lucky if it lasts a few hours.. yuck!

Taco Bell is known for being absolute trash but it's a novelty and fast food so sure it will do well.
Shake Shack meanwhile has a well-deserved excellent reputation. Cardiff is lucky to be one of the few places in the UK to have one.

Pier 64 in Penarth has closed again. https://www.walesonline.co.uk/whats-on/ ... s-17909455

High-end Cardiff wine bar and steakhouse Pier 64 has closed again after the company behind it ceased trading.
It's the second time the upscale eatery has closed its doors in the last year or so, with 21 members of staff being made redundant.

Its previous owners Pier 64 Limited went into liquidation back in January 2019 - former Wales footballer Craig Bellamy was the firm's director, having bought the property in Penarth Marina for £1,324,430 in 2014.

The waterfront restaurant then reopened later that same month under new ownership, but now that company, Sansemea (UK) Limited, has announced it has also started insolvency proceedings.

Business recovery specialists Begbies Traynor have been brought in to oversee the liquidation.
Huw Powell, partner at the practice, said: "In a difficult climate for leisure businesses, with high levels of competition, the company has ceased trading following losses suffered during a challenging first year."

Pier 64, which first opened in 2011, was originally the brainchild of Francis Dupuy, the Cardiff restaurateur behind some of the city's most acclaimed dining spots, such as the now defunct Le Gallois in Pontcanna and Chez Francis on Cowbridge Road.

I walked past the old Carluccios unit in Mermaid Quay and noticed the interior has been gutted, part of the outside area has been astro-turfed and blossom painted on the exterior wall. Peering through the window it looked as though there were baking trays - could this be a bakery given the surge in popularity due to the lockdown??

It's coffi co taking it over. They are opening a "gin & bake" venue, that's a secret garden the astro turf bit.
