Newport may technically be a city, but I wouldn't describe it as a rival. That's like saying the local 5-a-side football team are rivals of Manchester United! It acts as a commercial hub for that corner of south-east Wales but it really isn't on the same scale as Cardiff, and the low level of construction activity there is a reflection of that.

It's all relative. You're calling Swansea a rival of Cardiff, and Cardiff a rival of Bristol. You could stick Cardiff in a corner of Bristol and you probably wouldn't even notice it. Similarly Bristol eith London. There's always a bigger fish.

Well Cheers Simon, and now I know how Newport feels as my posting you seem to have 'airbrushed out'!! of the discussion What you said above is the point I was making - if you read it? Mind you I think Cardiff being quite that insignificant relative to Bristol is a bit of an exaggeration.

Cardiff has a population of approx 350k, Bristol 450k and Swansea 240k (exact figures depend which data source is used, and all increase considerably if you include the wider conurbation). So it's reasonable to compare these three cities, and all of them are important as hubs for a wider region.

A friend of mine who went to university in Bristol describes it as "Britain's largest village". We can never quite work out if this is praise or criticism.... !

I’ve found the planning app for the castle park view development in Bristol, it’s more like 86m rather than 98m, so about the same height as the new bus station tower in Cardiff

I work in Bristol but much prefer Cardiff. The entry to Central is in my opinion more impressive than Temple Meads, I am though hopelessly biased!

Changing subject is there any news on the Tower near Black Horse building? Just before C19 I am sure I saw equipment near the site?

I'm with you all the way on the hopelessly biased front!!

I also agree with the entry to Cardiff central compared to Temple Meads! although it also has to be said that Temple Meads knocks spots off cardiff regarding the actual station - let's hope that changes in the not too distant with plans for our stations improvement.

regarding that tower:
This is the tower proposed next to brickworks - curran road. Well I passed quite recently and no signs to suggest anything going on unfortunately. Whilst in the area... The Sytner garage on penarth road is all but demolished and the plans for that corner are (according to central quay render) for a 90metre residential tower. I'm not saying that's about to get underway but at least the land is being cleared for the possibility.

Yes it is, on which I said there was no activity on-site to suggest anything was iminent.
