Even a 737max 8 needs over 8,000 feet of runway when fully loaded.

Cardiff Airport’s runway is over 380m longer than
Than its rival Bristol Airport
It can take bigger planes

Who would travel on a Boeing Max though? For a lot of passengers, if it's Boeing, I'm not going.

I wish they would. I'm in Riyadh these days, sometimes in Dubai so a route home from Doha would be so nice as I can get into Doha so easily. There are so many Welsh people working over here right now that I'm sure the route would be popular.

Plus Doha is a great step across to South East Asia from Cardiff.

Great news on the Canada flight though, a nice positive bit of news for the airpprt.

The Airport have confirmed the new transatlantic route to Toronto, Canada.
Here is an article about it in the Independent..
Will the WestJet Route be sustainable?
I think it will..

I agree with you. That aircraft has lost all trust.
I bet that's what they'll be using though.

I wonder if this new CEO will be successful in getting more airlines on board? Better transport would only help, it frustrates me how bad the links to the airport are, especially when the airport and the trains are both government owned.

Yep, thats what they are going to use. To be honest, they probably wouldn't be able to fill a wide-body on a route like this anyway.

I flew from Bristol to Newark 20 odd years ago when United used to run a transatlantic service from there. That was on a 757 though and that aircraft is known for a very high power-to-weight ratio. Modern jets prioritise economy/range and even the narrow-bodies like the 737 MAX and A321LR/XLR need more runway that BRS has to offer for long haul flights

Seems like Cardiff has a USP in its runway and competitive landing fees, should be an easy sell for long haul, but seemingly not.

Does it just need a better management / sales / marketing team?

It's a hard sell as the airport is poorly located and connected particularly now plans for the Pendoylan by-pass have been dropped.

Not that Bristol Airport is an ideal location either. Filton and East Moors would have been better options for the two cities but the UK Government was scrabling for pennies in the 1950s and chose to adapt old RAF bases instead.
