I was in that part of the Bay yesterday - work still happening on the ice rink. There is a fair bit of activity down there - the apartments next to Morrisons has shot up & they seem to be working on apartments near the White Water Centre. Adds to the natural flow from Cardiff into Penarth Marina.

Anyone know how the internal part of the rink is progressing.

I've not read anything for a while about the owners of the Devils actually getting to purchase the rink to help get it finished, only the initial story about it. So has the issue of completion actually been resolved ?

This was posted by 'Sorac' on the Devil's Inferno message board on July 3rd.

Had a site visit today and was told work was on target and there is a lot more going on every time I go in. It is now that I can appreciate where all the money has gone in to the project. The effort and commitment by Greenbank and Chris of Ice Arena Wales is now very evident and as many of the things on the user groups wish lists as possible have been included in the development

They are really cracking on with it, underfloor heating has been installed in some of the changing rooms and now had top coat of screed as have other areas. There are works going on in all areas and it is pleasing to see it all come together after such a long period of campaigning and planning

He's posted some pictures here

If they have actually finished the exterior then I'm very disappointed. I was hoping they would have another layer over the top to give it the shiny metallic effect that was implied in the renders.
Anybody that has been there in person will have seen the shoddy build quality of the exterior. It still looks unfinished so I'm hoping that's the case. As right now it looks no more inviting than a factory warehouse.
Obviously this is just my opinion, but I'm sure many will be a bit annoyed at the final outcome.

@Cen

Its not often that the finished products looks anything like the renders. If anyone can recall, the renders for Celestia looked like something from Vancounver Harbour.

The ice rink is particularly frustrating though. The rink has gone through several different designs, some very nice, some questionable. I was excited by the final design as it was one of the better options and it looked sleek with a fitting icy effect, and it didn't look that hard to pull off. As of now, that icy effect looks like it will just be matte grey with some weird barcode design along the outside.

Given the amount of time it took to get this thing finalised by all parties - unless there is more building to come - this is a massive opportunity wasted. It also makes me worry for the rest of the ISV. We were shown sleek, shiny towers with a huge ski slope. It's starting to look like what we'll really get (if we even get it) will be a far cry from the renders, and yet another missed opportunity for the city of Cardiff. I would obviously love to be proven wrong though.

Can someone post the pictures for those of us who aren't on Facebook?

Noticed that diggers were clearing a plot next to the ice rink yesterday. Probably not the ski slope but maybe something?

I rather like the Pointe apartments, feels a bit Scandinavian. What is due next? Is it the tall apartments on the bay edge?

I think the talls are the final phase of the project and there's rather a lot still to do on the low rise stuff first. Unless plans change (which they may because of the general economic upturn, and specifically, the return in demand for inner city apartments) I wouldn't expect construction of the tall ones to start for another 2 - 3 years.
