That's scandalous, how much money are they keeping over and above the £7.50-£8 hourly rate? This is the kind of thing that breaks a brand like that. Shame as it's good food, reasonably priced.

Given that one waiter manages multiple tables in an hour, if they all gave the 12.5% the business is raking it in; my family alone must hand over a tenner or more for service every time we visit.

I think the story exposes the secret to Cote's "low prices": the price is actually higher than stated on the menu!

Would be interesting to see the aggregate service charge income, and compare it to the aggregate difference between their staff's regular pay and the industry average. I think, as lucky suggests, the service charge income, will far exceed an extra £1 or so an hour on basic pay for all staff.

Now, I agree with them that good service isn't just about the waiter - I don't expect the waiter to keep it all. But I expect it to be a top-up to staff wages, shared in some ratio between the waiter, and the kitchen staff. So a "tronc" system basically. If the company were to deduct a couple of pennies from that per pound to check compliance, I'm not too bothered actually.

I went there a few months ago with a friend. From what I remember the food was pretty good but the people at the next table got into an argument with the waitress about the bill. I think I'm right in saying the menu didn't include a service charge and that the staff didn't get the tips.

Looks like Las Iguanas and Turtle Bay are even worse. I certainly won't be going back till they change their practices.

Sad about Servini's but oh, please god, let something decent take over from Bosphorus in the Bay. It's been a total waste of a great site for years. Last (and final) time I ate there, there was a dead sparrow on the next table; presumably it had tried some of the leftover food.

It is a great spot for a restaurant but I only went once and never went back, place was empty food was very poor standard.

The Servini family sold it years ago and I think it's changed hands a few times since then. It's a very good business so I imagine it's being sold as a going concern. I doubt if a new owner would make any changes.

As for the Bosphorous - good riddance!
