Topping out ceremony at Cubric today -

The more I read about this project the more important I think it is. It seems as though Cardiff will be home to the leading research facility in Europe in this area of science.

Agree Karl. Whilst we have been keeping an eye of the Maindy sidings it has sort of crept up on us with a few buildings being completed. They are all excellent quality and design and the fact they house world class facilities cant help but enhance cardiff's Russell group status

An app has gone in for variation of planning conditions which is alla bit boring but something in the app which did catch my eye is that it is proposed to develop the remainder of the site with a proposed opening date of September 2018. A planning app for the rest of the site is likley to be filed early in 2016 with a proposed start date in the third quarter of 2016.

2016 is shaping up to be a very busy year for developments.

As an aside I went past the Cubric building the other day. I think it's very close to completion although none of the public realm works outside have commenced. It's not as architecturally impressive as I thought it would be although once the paving, planting and signage has been completed I'm sure it will improve matters so I'll reserve final judgment. On the other hand the Hadyn Ellis building, which I initially thought was a bit bland, has really grown on me. What I also like is that none of these developments look incongruous in Maindy Raod which is essentially a residential street full of red brick terraced houses.

I also wonder if Cardiff Uni are kicking themselves for not snapping up the piece of land at the junction of Maindy Rd and Cathays Terrace now occupied by a Lidl supermarket.

I quite like the Hadyn Ellis building, I don't think it makes Maindy Road look lobsided at all. In fact, it is good to see some interesting architecture in this part of town

I walked past today and the Cubric seemed pretty complete. It's a strange building in a way, very long and narrow but they must have their reasons! Still plenty of space on the site and there are diggers further up. I'd estimate 100m x 175m and you have all the space between Cubric and the railway line. They really ought to build a new bridge up there somewhere.

Why does the Hadyn Ellis building have a Mastiff armoured vehicle defence system stuck to the outside of it? Are they expecting RPG attacks?

The application for the next phase of the Maindy Road Campus has now gone in (including the bridge over the railway line). See link -

I haven't had time to go through the documents but the massing looks interesting. It remains to be seen if it is completed by 2018 as suggested above, but its a good sign that the Uni is pushing on with these type of developments.

You can never have too many bridges.

I like the design of the two buildings. One is more "traditional" if you like, and will house a lot of labs, including specialist labs (on lower floors). The other will house social science researchers, 'collaborative', 'incubator' and 'exhibition' spaces and is a bit more interesting in terms of its form, with different floors being separate elements almost.

The bridge is also quite interesting - the steps down are off to the side of the main span of the bridge which ends in 'dead ends' - I could not see a lift there, but perhaps missed it (that's the obvious thing).

Only thing that's a bit of a shame is a large at-grade car park where the future phase 4 of the scheme will be located (2 more research buildings and a multi-storey car park). I can see they need that parking, but it does render the public realm a little problematic - especially the links to the existing buildings further south.
