I accept some of the trends on inequality are similar but in the US they have been much longer lasting. My grandmother may have voted for Thatcher, but only because she also voted for, I presume, Baldwin, Churchill, McMillan Heath and later Major. I don't think you can accuse them all of being for 'the 1%', but many middle income people felt they were a better bet than Labour and had a point.

Well, I put it to you that they didn't have a point. It was just that "persuade people to vote for us against their best interest" again. Same old.

With inequality of incomes, about two-thirds of the population live in households with less than the mean (average) income. So if people's behaviour remained unchanged, two thirds would benefit financially if you redistributed completely so everyone had the same income. Should we all vote for such a party?

No, because incentives matter. People are selfish, at least to some extent. If you equalise completely, theres no financial incentive for me to work hard and get ahead. So I slack off.

One of the key divides between "left" and "right" is how to trade off "redistribution" on the one hand, and "incentives" on the other. And the other is just how "steep" that trade-off is, and how much, if any, redistribution, actually is good for growth because while it weakens incentives, it allows less fortunate people to take a fuller more productive role in society, the economy etc.

So actually it can be in in the interests of relative affluent people to vote for "more redistribution" if we're doing too little redistribution to enable such participation. On the other hand, it can be in the intersts of relatively poor people to vote for "less redistribution" if we have a system that weakens incentives so much that it constrains the economy.

Similar arguments can be made for things like workers rights, etc. Trade-offs. Its why I'm a political moderate.

I'm not sure I agree. I am certainly still centre left when it comes to redistribution. I just think it needs to be done in the most efficient and sensible way possible. Which may mean higher taxes on property say. Rather than a tax on more mobile tax bases - like top incomes, or corporate profits.

London craft brewer looking for premises in Cardiff:

This could be the latest addition to Cardiff’s growing list of beer destinations.

Brodie’s Beers, based in East London, are understood to be interested in opening a premises in the Welsh capital.

The family-run firm already operate three pubs in London, in Covent Garden, Soho, and Leyton, right next to their brewery.

Brodie’s are thought to be looking at a number of premises, including one on Westgate Street.

Westgate Street: next door to the old post office or Golate House next to Bewdog?

Yep, it's now officially the Moonlight Cafe.

I just love the snappy Walesonline headline.
'There was literally no roof left' Busy Cardiff street cordoned off after large fire sweeps through shisha cafe

Remind me again Shisha, is there where people sit around smoking??

The Corporation on Cowbridge Road East is no longer trading. A great building that houses a shit pub. I hope someone goes in there and makes it a success. If Wetherspoons didn't have the Ivor Davies across the road I'm sure they would be interested in taking it over.

Jantra wants to know why Cambo is responding to himself and whilst we are at it why is he also disagreeing with himself too?

Ooops, Jantra - I was disagreeing when you said I had "moved to the right" as I had gotten older. (I seem to have deleted your part of the 'quote' (you had quoted me)).

PC's on City Rd set to be demolished -

http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales ... t-11020307

I think this would be a mistake. City Rd is a hotchpotch of architectural styles, but this building is one of the few landmark buildings there. It's also a purpose built public house in a style that is not that common in Cardiff. With decent management and a good food offering I think PC's could be an attractive proposition for A3 particularly with the amount of purpose built student accommodation being built literally yards away.

I was in the Great Western the other day, not somewhere I'm very familiar with and was quite impressed by it as a building. I hadn't realised that it is, alas, another Weatherspoon's. They also have the Prince of Wales too and the Cross Inn in Gabalfa. They're all fine buildings in their way but a bit of pub variety wouldn't go amiss. What with the Gower going too maybe this is just the way it is for the independent pub nowadays.

i think PC's is being demolished to make way for a bigger student block that has permission next door on the plumb centre, think they will have a redesign to incorporate a much larger build.
