Is Cardiff low rise.. Compare this list

Are other cities in the UK pulling away from Cardiff in the tall bulging arena ?

I think Cardiff already stacks up quite well compared to most British cities in terms of "high rise". The major exception is London of course. The highest building in Birmingham (UK's 2nd city) is still the comms tower built in the 60's. People often cite Manchester as being higher rise than Cardiff, but apart from the Beetham Tower there's nothing else that's much taller than Stadium House or Capital Tower. Manchester would have a much better skyline if there were a few more towers in the vicinity of Beetham. When (if) the Watkins Jones towers get built, plus the JR Smart schemes and the Central Square tower I think the Cardiff skyline will be pretty impressive for a British city - the view from the Penarth end of the Bay especially. I'm also holding out hope for the ISV scheme, which again would add bulk to the skyline.

The thing that appears to be in our favour is that we will have more of a concentration of the 'taller' buildings. Our city centre isn't massive and within it the plan seems to be to almost encourage taller buildings within the enterprise zone area and bute terrace. This is a relatively compact area. The result should be a more interesting skyline than having these buildings spotted around the city. Also this will make for an impressive first impression of the city if arriving by rail especially. In other areas the ISV and Dumballs road may both have a fair density of taller building (hopefully) within the next 5-10 years. I believe that this City will be known for having a pretty reasonable skyline in the not too distant (I hasten to add that I mean compared to other British cities - Manhattan, Chicago, Dubai may take a little longer to catch!! despite the 'fears' of some!! )

I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but let's put things into perspective, there are something like 436 towers being planned in London right now:
http://www.theconstructionindex.co.uk/n ... -in-london

We're in a much better place than Bristol (they have a policy against tall buildings) and with these new student towers and JR Smart's development, we're heading in the right direction. But I'd like to see a few more towers like Capital Tower. Say, circa 25-storey office towers. I still think that Callaghan Square and/or Wood Street would be an ideal spot.

Many people have stated that one of the key attractions of Cardiff is that it's so compact. Let's keep it that way and go taller rather then sprawling outwards and eating into our green belt.

London is unlike any other city in the UK or even Europe down to its sheer size (to the detriment of the UK, in my opinion), so shouldn't be compared. The UK has hundreds of largely low-rise towns and cities, so it all depends on what you're comparing it to. Also, just because Brighton, Portsmouth and Swansea have one or two buildings taller than anything in Cardiff, it does not mean that they compare to Cardiff on average.

As much as we talk ourselves down in Cardiff, the reality is that even if people think it's small, it's around the tenth largest city in the UK (and that's not counting the capital region itself). And our skyline is far, far above the UK average. The fact that we can start comparing Cardiff to much larger, older, established industrial cities like Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool and Birmingham (the only cities that are truly ahead of Cardiff) is pretty amazing to me, and we should be patient. Because Cardiff is definitely punching above its weight for its age, and the future looks bright.

Well yes fair play that's pretty impressive in London - but London is in a different league, like the premier league of Cities! with the likes of new york, chicago, paris, hong kong, tokyo! etc.. But if we conveniently forget about London :? then in the Uk I think our skyline could look pretty good! But we've a long way to go for sure.

Also, for what it's worth, I actually think London's skyline is an unorganised mess of buildings that are just designed to look "different". There's no way a skyscraper should be able to adopt the name "Walkie Talkie" or "Cheese Grater".

If you actually take a look at London's skyline and compare it to, say, Chicago's, it looks awfully planned and doesn't really have any sort of cohesion.

This is all just my opinion of course, but I don't think we should worry about keeping up with London, as it's nothing special anyway.

I wouldn't compare Cardiff with London just as I wouldn't compare any other UK city with London - it stands alone as a metropolis. If London wants tall buildings then it will get tall buildings because of the financial institutions based there. Personally I don't care much for the current London skyline - the Shard is an impressive building but looks lonely. My favourite part of the skyline is Canary Wharf because of the clustering of those buildings.

if we're discussing London then you really need to consider having three distinct clusters: the city, canary wharf and vauxhall. maybe one day they will merge into one (city and Vauxhall can't be too far off)

apparently, this image is London with all its projects. looks impressive if they all come off

You can add the South Bank, Elephant and Castle and Stratford to the list of clusters in London. Furthermore, Canada Water, the Greenwich peninsular and City Road will all have impressive skylines.
