Football would be the number 1 sport in Wales (if it is not already) if we were more successful.

Rugby is forced down our throats just like the Welsh language. Media promotes rugby more.
Also football fans are made out to be all fighting thugs, when true football fans know this is nonsense.
Rugby fans get away with murder and it is classed as high jinx !

One swallow doesn't make a summer. In football terms, we are still a very small fish in a very big pond. The rugby pond is much smaller.

the rugby pond is more like a puddle. interestingly, 1.27m people watched the quarter final match against Belgium, more than any other TV program in Wales ever. In my opinion, that says it all. Football is by far the most popular sport and given a little bit of success it shows the Welsh public will support in droves. Having 50,000 fans in Paris and Lille for the Belgium game was something else altogether.

This debate is a bit childish "my father is bigger than yours". Supporters of sport A insist theirs is more popular, supporters of sport B insist otherwise. I think it might depend on how you measure popularity anyway. It's not all about how many people physically play the sport, or go to watch it live.

Anyway, isn't fishing or something supposed to be the most popular "sport"? Doubt they'd fill even one supporters' coach. They must have measured that "popularity" that in a very special way indeed.

it's a fair point. however we did have this conversation (about 'sport' when in dune du pilat a couple of weeks ago....what is a sport and what is a game? basically a sport is where you pit yourself against someone else and rely on skill whereas a game is everything else. I'm not sure if it always works but it seems to work for me. in that case fishing isn't a sport

Hunting, shooting and fishing were regarded as 'sport' long before there were organised 'games'.
For instance Izaak Walton refers to angling as a 'sport' in The Complete Angler (1653).

So today is the day!! I'm feeling nervous already - but whatever happens, one things for sure, we've had an incredible journey! fantastic bbc wales programme last night on the road to the semi finals. Having just watched it on iplayer it makes me feel that portugal will have to have a very good game to halt our path to the final! But our task is massive and missing two key players makes it even bigger. Nevertheless I'm continuing to dare to dream!! it's going to be quite a day that will either end in unbelievable, hysterical, jubilation OR immense pride in our contribution to this competition. Whoever wins in this game - the biggest in the history of Welsh football, Wales will be a winner regardless, they will have inspired a generation and more football success will surely follow!!

OOPS!! yes indeed - guilty as charged! and apologies! I'm sure loads on here give a s**t about Wales!! if it wasn't my forum I'd ban myself!!

Anyway although I've got a bit of a headache! I can recall that game last night. I'm very proud of how well Wales did in this tournament, but in a semi final we needed our absolutely strongest team and we were missing some key players last night - I think the loss of Ramsey was a massive blow. Nevertheless they can all return as Welsh sporting heroes! now where's the paracetamol - hic!
