Eastern Bay Link

PostTue Sep 30, 2014 3:42 pm

As was reported on the previous forum, Welsh Government have resurrected the plans for the Eastern Bay Link, between Queen's Gate Roundabout (at the end of the Butetown "Skislope") and the phantom roundabout on Ocean Way: see here for details and a map: http://wales.gov.uk/topics/transport/roads/schemes/a4232/eastern-bay-link/?lang=en

It appears that funding is now arranged, as per the budget announcements today: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-29431502 BBC Wales are not hugely familiar with the project, as they state the £57 million is going to build a road which would "...connect Cardiff Bay with the A48 at Tremorfa". Whilst that would be great, I suspect the cash won't quite stretch that far!

Sooo... when will it start being built? And will the finalised plans hook up to the skislope, or will it remain redundant, as the map on WG website suggests?

The tender estimate for the road to the Ocean way phantom roundabout was 25m-30m (http://www.sell2wales.gov.uk/search/show/search_view.aspx?ID=JUN036525), suggesting either the WG estimates are whack, or the £57m might get them a bit further than the phantom roundabout... though it doesn't seem enough to get them all the way to the A48.

That's useful information. Perhaps if the extra is not explained by increased costs of the new road, it is for upgrades to the existing Rover Way? Dualling or other works? The old level crossing / access between the sites of the metal recycling on opposite sites of the road would be one major issue with that though, not to mention the numerous roundabouts.

This article does allude to the ski jump being extended but the picture doesn't. Also a next year start date which is good news.

The Sell2Wales sites talks about a high slew bridge - but there is no bridge shown on the map - is it planned to finish the ski ramp (obvious choice.....so probably not) or bridge across Ocean Way.? Confused

I figured the whole thing would be a bridge/flyover, as it will have to cross the various dock roads and railway.

Might be a bit of a wait for the completed eastern bay link, but at least when work starts on the first section in July it may force a response from the WAG about the rest of the scheme.
