There was a discharge of condition in last week's planning apps so it seems to be progressing behind then scenes.

I do wonder whether the Premier Inn in the Bay and the Custom House Street one are part of a single construction contract. The Bay one appears to be slightly behind schedule which could be having a knock on effect on the second scheme.

Seeing as the building's been pre-sold to L&G there doesn't seem to be any other logical explanation for the delay.

Well fingers crossed that we may see some construction on customhouse street in 2018! and there was me thinking it would be a hive of activity by now, what with this one and the big one just down the road Perhaps all will be built - but it takes soo long!! :|

Any signs of this starting?

I saw on Paul's Flickr a photo of a nearby road closure happening a few days ago

Just gone past the back of this building on the train from Central Station and there is machinery on site!

Looks like they are working on the retaining wall for the railway rather than the new building, perhaps part of the electrification works as a section of wall has been removed. Could this have been the delay (to both projects!!).

That could be the delay for the Premier Inn, Hope Street Tower and John Street tower.

The John Street Tower floor tower only has outline planning permission and is their second phase of the project, and I just can't see it starting anytime soon unless they get a pre-let from a hotel occupier and/or major interest in the office element below the tower. The first phase is the southern plot, which I think is a 10 floor office. That site has people there working, and judging by Paul's post the other day it seems to be railway engineers rather than preparation work.

As for the Hope Street tower, I wonder if it'll go ahead as planned or have a re-design to do something other than student residential

Whitbread have announced a 3rd new Premier In for Cardiff, under the new Zip brand;

Whitbread to debut budget brand Zip in Cardiff: The Times has reported Whitbread will open a new “no-frills” version of its Premier Inn brand today as it seeks to expand its hotel business with new formats after it sells Costa Coffee. The company will launch its first Zip by Premier Inn in Cardiff in February, with rooms from £19 a night, and aims to open three or four before deciding whether to introduce them more widely. Premier Inn managing director Simon Jones told The Times consumer research and a trial of six Zip rooms at its hotel in South Mimms, Hertfordshire, had established guests were willing to forgo large rooms, central locations and “bells and whistles” if it saved them money. The average price of a standard Premier Inn room is £57. The Times added: “Whitbread, which is in the process of selling Costa to the Coca-Cola Company for £3.9bn, has 789 Premier Inn hotels in Britain, six in the Middle East and one in Germany. Its Zip in Cardiff is near an industrial estate and it has secured a site in Southampton for a second one. The rooms will be roughly half the size of a standard Premier Inn room at 8.5 square metres. They are designed by Priestman Goode, the consultancy behind first-class cabins for Air France and Lufthansa.”

Ipswich Road, next to David Lloyd's by the look of it.
