Cardiff has won two awards from the FDI Magazine European Cities and Regions of the Future 2016/17. The magazine is part of the Financial Times group and benchmarks both cities and regions' attractiveness for future inward investment or FDI (Foreign Direct Investment).
The biennial league tables placed Cardiff as 7th for FDI strategy in the league table of Mid-sized European Cities which also included Edinburgh, Bilbao and Zurich. Cardiff also won an award for business friendliness finishing 9th along with Great Western City partner Bristol also ranked in the top 10.
The rankings provide an invaluable benchmark for investors to assess a locations for FDI competitiveness and serves as a barometer of attractiveness for cities and regions. The submission to FDI magazine was made by the Council's Economic Development team who were congratulated by the magazine in particular for Cardiff's FDI Strategy award which was the only ranking assessed by an independent panel of judges. The Council's FDI strategy has utilised a combination of market intelligence, targeted lead generation, international marketing and events, incentives, data and international networks to develop and deliver successful inward investment projects for the city creating jobs and attracting investment.
Cardiff Council leader Phil Bale said, 'The awards by FDI Magazine highlights to an international audience that Cardiff is one of Europe's best cities to do business and endorses the fantastic work that the Council's Economic Development team are doing in attracting investment to the city and creating new jobs'.
