After years of false dawns it will be great to see this large and important site making some progress at last. There are some good features in this plan; the footbridge is very welcome and the Riverside walkway will be well used (especially if the section past Century Wharf is opened up - pressure may need to be applied there...). The grid pattern of the streets should encourage people to pass through the new development, and if space is provided at ground level for small businesses, shops, cafes etc, the streets should be attractive and lively.

There is one area that needs a rethink - where the new streets meet the river, that nice neat grid pattern collapses and instead there is a series of lumpy buildings sitting at random angles. They don"t relate to each other, nor to the river. The design of that area really does look like an afterthought - hopefully it is not too late to try again.

Anyone know this development’s roadmap? Construction start etc. Can’t load the documents.

The consultation website appears to be taken down, but I downloaded some of the Design & Access Statement which states:

Planning application early 2021
Construction starting 2022 continuing to 2032. Four phases considered -
Phase 1 - central section between CAV College and River.
Phase 2 - northern section towards Penarth Road
Phase 3 & 4 - southern sections

2500 homes is quite a lot. More than I would have expected.

There's alot of mid-rise apartment buildings in those artists pictures, and it covers alot of land, so it's no surprise it's a couple of thousand I guess.

At the risk of veering off topic the develpment will throw up an interesting conundrum regarding electoral divisions in council elections.

Currently Butetown is one of a handful of a single-member wards in the city because of the unique history and demographicsof the community there. This development would add circa 5,000 electors, enough to justify a second seat but also diluting the influence of the original community.

It will be interesting to see whether they redraw the boundaries to create a more compact but still highy ethnically diverse division or just add an extra seat on the current boundaries.

I'm neutral but I can see there are pros and cons to both courses of action.
