I personally think it should stay. Not everybody who currently hires the CIA will be big enough to fit 15,000 or even at half that capacity. Although the council owns the freehold according to the article, no doubt it'll be sold off to raise funds to build the new one.

I should imagine the new arena will be able to host smaller events as well. Modern arenas can be reconfigured for different capacaties.

It will be interesting to see if a Shefield / Belfast style Ice Pad is included in the plans. IAW is selling out regularly these days for Devils games and there's some discussion on their message board about using the Arena for big fixtures.

Just to add an element of confusion into the mix: https://www.walesonline.co.uk/business/ ... r-14282545

Some new images within the previous article that appear to indicate the Red Dragon Centre as being retained and the new arena purely within the confines of the existing car park. That being said, it could just be a basic massing model as it makes no indication to any road reconfiguration and even shows the partially vacant restaurant outlet at the top of the car park as remaining in place.

I don't think we can read too much into any of the images we've seen yet, there's so many things to sort out commercially with the owners of the Red Dragon Centre, with the Council, with Live Nation etc.

I'd love to see the Red Dragon Centre go, and the Council Offices, and all the smaller food units down there and make use of all that land in a more efficient way and build a complex that has a 15,000 capacity arena but also other spaces so smaller events/concerts can happen. So kind of like the NEC with its multiple halls so that all sorts of events can happen down there. At the same time make sure there's enough space so that things like the bowling alley, cinema, restaurants etc. that are already there still have space down there, but in better designed buildings that make better use of the space.

Hopefully it'll help some of the other stalled property developments down there like Cardiff Waterside, Merchant Quarter (remember that!!) and maybe even Porth Teigr, although that's possibly a bit far from the arena to gain much.

Could we see the remaining Cardiff Waterside vacant plots end up being used for more hotels for example? They are already doing that on Pierhead Street with one of them being a Premier Inn. What a great location the plot between Atradius and the Senedd would be for a 5 star hotel for example?

Merchant quarter has started again, they have been removing asbestos from the buildings. Cardiff Waterside has recently been sold so hopefully we will see plans soon. Porth Teigr i have no idea why they haven't at least started on the houses and apartments in the eastern part opposite Adventurers Quay.

Thanks, I forgot that Merchant Quarter had started again!

Porth Teigr wise I agree, it's all a bit odd. Things can't be working out for them otherwise why not build those houses, they looked quite decent as well. I was also hoping to see at least one more of those GloWorks buildings go up by now as well. It's a lovely looking building, and has let well, but it looks lonely as shit on it's own.

This was the name given to proposed development of this building with offices at the back. I think Merchant Quarter as such no longer exists (although I stand to be corrected) but reference is to the fact that this building is being converted into apartments. This is surely great for the building and the Bay, extending activity into wonderfully historic butetown!

It's was (and still is) Merchant Place, not Merchant Quarter, sorry. My mistake!

There's a small website, not alot on it

http://merchant-place.com/

Our own thread on it is here

Travelodge on Hemingway Road has submitted a planning application for a 32 bedroom extension. The plans can be viewed on the Council website under application reference numbers 18/00437/MJR and 18/00436/MJR.

Is this in direct response to the proposed arena next door?
