I can understand red tape, but these type of buildings shoot up in London and other cities
Let's hope this does get built, not just for the look but for the benefit of the extra income for the city centre

Cheers Peiriannydd you do seem to have knowledge of what the actual position is regarding commencement or not of this development. Just wondering if any doubts about whether or not it goes ahead also include the other project in Bridge Street ? or is that a completely seperate issue. Sorry to pry but you know how it is here! :)

No, the building on Bridge St is a different project in its own right and the two are not bound together. Expect demolition of the existing buildings to start August/September and ground works a few weeks later.

That's a relief. I was starting to think Watkin Jones put two applications in to make sure that they could get one building approved, then leave the other, less desired one.

Just went to look at the planning app again ( as you do on a sunny sunday afternoon!! gotta get out more! )
and noticed this letter

http://planning.cardiff.gov.uk/online-applications/files/4A9E952C91B269EE703D138D54091057/pdf/15_02820_MJR-DECISION_NOTICES-1811267.pdf

I would love to think that if things have been going on behind the scenes then this is something of a green light! Anybody know the relevance of such a letter in these procedures?

What did it say Paul? Document seems unavailable atm.

Whatever it is I hope its positive, probably like you in more dreamy moments or when there is rubbish on telly, I imagine the new John St tower & this going up. Aligned to the Smart Apartments I will undoubtedly take my coffee to a bench and just take some time to stand & stare!

Seems pretty positive to me! And it definitely hints as to why it was delayed... Issues with the council maybe? A protest from the Radisson? I find their objections rather hypocritical. You can't build a tall building and then complain when other developers build a tall building next door. Unison House has a better argument, but even then, it's a city centre. They can't just expect the council to cater to their needs only and make sure that no neighbouring building blocks their precious sunlight (of which there is barely any in Cardiff anyway!).

For anyone that wants to see the planning documents, the code is 15/02820/MJR

Sorry Rhodri - I only noticed a new document but didn't have time to go through it all, which is why it's a very good thing that we've got Cen! who has shed more light on the subject (pardon the pun)

Perhaps we may yet see something on site in the not to distant then! Interestingly the Bridge Street project also had a 'letter' document on friday. These projects may get going in tandem - they can share a cement mixer!!

seems like the LPA have clarified the conditions of development. I am no expert but I thought this always happened: the planning committee agrees the application subject to conditions being met and then the LPA outline at a later date what those conditions are.

As Cen says, it seesm +ve to me, we should see some action here soon. that part of town is going to look like Dubai (on a miniature scale)

Once this goes up, along with John Street, Herbert Street, Charles Street and any assorted CS and CQ mid and high-rises, Cardiff will have a fair claim to having the best skyline in the UK outside London, competing with perhaps Liverpool. Manchester may have taller buildings but they're rather spread out while Leeds is not the most aesthetically pleasing.

What I also like about this growing cluster of reasonably high buildings is the impact they will have on the train visitor to Cardiff, pulling into the station, dissecting these tall buildings. When they then arrive (hopefully to a much improved station) they walk out to be greeted by Central Square! At last the kind of first impression that is required for an ambitious city! Let's just hope they are all built
