I think the majority on here are not against this or any other development in principle. I think many of us have been the beneficiaries of past greenfield development (and indeed may have lost out) and take a pragmatic view towards Cardiff growing as a city. I certainly agree that a strong Cardiff well connected to it's hinterland is the best chance for south east Wales and possibly further afield to shake off the current economic malaise.

That's why I'm so frustrated with the transport proposals for Plasdwr as they give ammunition to those who oppose the development for other reasons. It's a bit of an own goal. I'm not expecting Redrow to push forward the Cardiff Metro scheme on their own but I'm assuming that Plasdwr has had a gestation period of many years and at the end of it this is the best they can come with? It's manna from heaven for NIMBY's, an absolute gift.

Everyone knew this scheme would be controversial and that transport provision would be the acid test.

I do not think a rail link should be a full pre-requisite - but I think that should be a priority for any metro (along with stations to the east and a Park and Ride in St Mellons). And in its absence, significant investment in bus transports, including bus priority within the development, would be vital - and should receive a significant part of its funding from developerst.

The transport problems with Plas Dŵr seem to me to be pretty insoluable without either heavy or light rail. However good the bus priority system within the devlopment are, buse swill have to reach the city along already congested routes. The only alternative to rail that I can think of is either a new road or a rapid bus route along the river route proposed for the Llantrisant Radial in the 1970s. The effect of that on our parklands and enviroment would be horrendous.

I'm not by any means anti Plas Dŵr - but a better transport solution is desperately needed.

the disused railway someone mentiones really needs to come to the fore. and if the Plymouth estate and redrow want to develop and make profits they pay for the infrastructure needed too.

I'm not too sure about that, Redrow have this development as "coming soon" on their own website although cliking on the link does point to that Plasdwr page. 2 developments in Lisvane plus 1 in Wenvoe, seems business is good at the moment for Redrow. Not to mention their massive Mon Bank site in Newport.

Bit of a strange one this - I called Redrow's South Wales Headquarters about a week ago. Asked them for info on this development, the staff didn't have a clue what I was talking about despite Plasdwr listed as "coming soon" on their developments for Cardiff.

Any one know if this actually happening?

It is still going through planning - and will take a time. There are detailed applications for two sites that make up part of the master planning area though. One to the North/South of Llantrisant Road near where the Radyr road joins it. And another for Pentrebane.

I think Redrow is helping coordinate - they will not develop the whole site themselves.

Looks like we may see a bit of movement on this one soon - there was a lot of activity on the field near the Heol Isaf roundabout last week and I noticed there are utility works going on along Llantrisant Road by Wales & West Utilities, BT Openreach & Virgin Media (presumably investigating and improving utility provision in the area in advance of work starting).

I don't think we'll see portakabins in the next couple of weeks, but I'm sure It'll be soon...

Just North of Fairwater railway station are the remains of a railway line that ran up to Llantrisant and beyond I believe and if it brought back into use, could be useful for this development. OK so it would involve the demolition of some 70s houses, but then again you can't make an omelette!

The corridor leaves the current line just north of Waungron Rd Station not Fairwater and it's always been a part of the Metro proposals. The corridor is shown on the Plasdwr plans.

It doesn't actually involve the demolition of any housing as the alignment can be joined from the City Line any where from just north of Kenilworth Court to Fairwater Road and run along the preserved track bed. To be fair to our city planners for once that corridor has been carefully preserved for the best part of four decades as a possible future transport link.
