Here's today's picture. Sorry for the quality - the windows are a bit dirty! The last of the steelwork is being put in to complete the main arena and the walls are almost finished for the leisure side. There's a huge mass of blank steel! I don't know if it will be painted in any way.

There are rumours going round the local construction industry that the ice rink has been put on hold for potentially six months - the reason being that the developer has not sold as many apartments as planned and therefore does not have the funds to finance the rink. If this is true (and hopefully it is not) then it will become apparent very quickly but it is quite unusual for a project to be halted this far into construction.

I've heard the total opposite, that the development is selling better than expected. It would be slightly odd to just halt the ice rink mid build, but we shall see!

I actually wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't selling well - the prices seem well above equivalent properties in Cardiff. Its pointless looking at the development website - which houses are sold or not seems to be updated once in a blue moon.

Unlikely I would have thought. The Cardiff Devils new owners have become part-owners of the new rink and have very deep pockets. The Big Blue Tent is a near sell-out for every game at the moment and the Devils need the extra capacity for their business plan to work. If there was any problem with the new rink I suspect the Canadians would just buy it outright. See here.

Lifted from the Cardiff Devils forum.

I heard this yesterday. So did a bit of research. Keir Construction have no problem financially indeed for a construction company they seem to be doing well.

As for Greenbank Partnerships, I have no idea. They seem to be a typical development company. They have set up a separate development company to develop the and deliver the scheme.

I doubt very much we have a huge amount to worry about, though given our history I can see why we would all start getting nervous about this.

I ended up asking Greenbank and this is what I got back, very prompt replay as well.

Thanks for your email.
Greenbank in partnership with the main contractor, Kier Construction Ltd, has agreed to a temporary reorganization of the build programme for Cardiff Pointe and IAW in order to manage available local resources more efficiently. Construction on the Ice Arena is continuing, with the cladding of the building scheduled for completion in January.
Hope this answers your question.

Regards

Chris Hartrey
Operations Director

There you have it.

As an update to this, having just spoken to a former colleague who was working on the project he confirmed that Kier staff are being transferred to the residential development. Work has been slowing down to complete elements of the roof and cladding - presumably this explains the statement "Construction on the Ice Arena is continuing, with the cladding of the building scheduled for completion in January." Great - the cladding finishes in January but nothing else is happening for a while after!

I've not managed to get down to the Sports Village for a little while, has anything progressed? The statement from Greenbank mentioned 'the cladding of the building [is] scheduled for completion in January' - so do we have a fully clad building yet?
