I remember years back someone from Swansea telling me the big 2 retailers in the centre of Swansea were Debenham's and M&S. Both gone. Even Newport has a proper M&S in the city centre. The Big 2 are probably Boots and Primark in Swansea now.
Presumably more people heading to Cardiff to shop from the west now?
Newport hasn't had a proper M&S in its city centre since 2013. What it has now is just a FoodHall.

There's nothing on the scale of St. David's elsewhere, and whenever a big retailing name opens their 'first store in Wales' in Cardiff, we all know that it'll probably be their only one.
Positively, M&S say they're looking for a replacement full line store on a smaller scale in Swansea, and they did open a replacement retail park store in Newport. Sadly Newport city centre has become a bit of a ghost town since as there's just not much else left, the proximity to Cardiff has definitely hit Newport harder.
Retail expansion? I don't think any city centre can be described as expanding when it comes to retail. The loss of Howell's. Debenham's, and a host of other stores, surely makes it a net contraction. Yes, The St. David's expansion and addition of John Lewis was welcome, though it inevitably seemed to cause other areas of the city centre to lose footfall.
I find myself worrying what would happen if John Lewis ever did decide to close. It would really destroy the city centre.
