@nicksocrates

Is this final design official then as I do very much like the covered walkway and tall buildings that frame the square

I do not think the transport hub's winning competition entry has been made public yet. But I imagine that this is the winning design as the image would not have been released. This scheme (was by Gensler who are the largest firm of USA architects (they have a london office). If it is the winning design then they beat off Foster + Partners, Wilkinson Eyre and local firm HMA.

It does look great. Regarding the canopy - it looks like they took local firm Powell Dobson architects' train station extension (concept) and made it go around the corner. In my opinion this would be the first thing to be valued out.

Sorry you can not compare this scheme to Capital Quarter! Fair play to Paul McCarthy (Right Acres) for pushing this forward and getting world class architects on board

The proposed new bus station would be a terminating point for out of town buses - I assume you would also be able to catch a bus from there? It would only be used as a 'turn around' area for city buses!

Network Rail are not happy with the current plans for Central Square and say that it is unacceptable that there will be no drop-off point at the front of the station. Personally, I believe this is a non-issue as there is plenty of space at the back of the station that a lot of people use as drop-off point anyway, as it's easier to access. I actually like the idea of a fully pedestrianised square in front of the station as long as there is easy access to the back of the station. Hopefully this doesn't impact the progression of this scheme. Maybe if Network Rail were clearer about there plans to develop Central Station there wouldn't be so much indecision!

its bollocks that's what it is/ If you come out of the station you have a taxi rank in front of you and one to the right. we are only going to lose the one in front. the poor darlings will now have to walk an extra 10 foot to the rank on the right. how will they cope?

so people are just happy to moan about every little thing. this is progress and there is often some disruption to make things better.

Imagine where the city would be if it wasn't for so many irrational complaints halting every development? I try to avoid the WalesOnline Facebook page as it's full of comments from people that shout "Waste of government money!" as if everything that ever gets built is built by the WAG. They seem to have no concept of private investment.

Considering that the plans are going forward to the planning committee this week, I really hope nobody pays any attention to this.

Also, while I'm on this topic, the picture previously posted of the transport hub by nicksocrates is actually being used on the official Central Square website. So maybe this is in fact the final design? We should find out in a few months as they are currently in discussion with transport consultants.

This is the website: http://centralsquarecardiff.co.uk

Another thing I found interesting is that it states: "Plots 6 & 7 of the masterplan area are the cleared sites formerly comprising the Western Mail print-works and offices. These sites are earmarked for student accommodation and private rented sector residential apartments contained in two spectacular towers of 15 and 20 storeys above a 5 story podium level, which are currently under design development."

So perhaps they will be building more than one tower, in addition to the already mentioned residential tower. The site is worth a look.

And there are ALWAYS taxis there, so arguably the one to the right is more than enough. If there is more demand more will keep coming, it's quite a simple concept and there's enough space there

On top of that, heading right will now make more sense as that is where the new bus station will be.

It wouldn't be a bad thing if taxi pick-up was from the back of the station as well, with drop off at the front (so people can get tickets and use facilities).

And don't Network Rail have plans to extend the station out front over the existing taxi drop off points anyway? Looks like they are trying to get someone else to pay for something that their own plans would entail anyway!
