The plan is to have a bus station right next to the train station - on the site of Marland House! That is a better location than the current location. It frees up a prime site, and allows access on Mil Stad event days. And it is council policy to have a bus station.

Either you are saying:
You think that Marland House is "too far" from the station. Which I think is an indefensibly stupid thing to say.
Or that you think the council won't keep their word on the bus station unless they had their hand held to the fire and wider redevelopment plans weren't able to progress until they had got the new bus station built.
Or both perhaps.

It isn't nerdy or amateur to spell out the assumptions which have to underlie your arguments. In fact its quite a good way of seeing where you could be coming from.

I disagree with the first. And while I admit a new bus station isn't guaranteed til construction is well under way, I think the council have invested a lot of political capital in the delivery of a bus station. So I'm quite sure it will happen.

David James at Media Wales seems to share my scepticism:

Not much of an argument there Rhodri. Media Wales is owned by Labour- supporting Trinity Mirror and if, as in this case, they are critical of a Labour administration (in this instance he criticises both Cardiff council and the Welsh Government) then the aware reader will know that something is definitely wrong.

The editorial line at Media Wales is to support Labour.

In this article, Media Wales are attacking Labour.

Why would that be so?

He seems to be under the illusion that it would have been practical and/or reasonable to stick on a multi-million pound S106 agreement on an office scheme in Cardiff, where viability is already problematic.

The Bus Station, frankly, is the council's problem. The existing one is not fit for purpose and a new one needs to be built irrespective of whether the BBC offices and wider office scheme happens. It should be funded by the council's resources - which includes any profit it makes from the land transactions it makes in central square, or elsewhere.

And finally, access to the station by taxi or car is important for people within Cardiff - and that access will be maintained. For those outside Cardiff, access via train is much easier and much more sustainable. It's be pretty foolish to drive from Ponty to Cardiff Central, as opposed to get the train.

Western Mail is a feather just waiting for the breeze. The 'attack' is meandering & blunted by trying to be a bit too clever, offers little in the way of alternative & crucially for any article or opinion, misses the point.

There will be a bus station, maybe not the one that is there now but is that such a bad thing?

Interesting use of words there, Randy.

"The Bus Station, frankly, is the council's problem."

It is also a problem for bus users, both prospective and existing. It shouldn't be a problem.

And as for it not being "fit for purpose" it most certainly was, until the Labour-run council downgraded it. It might have been unsightly and old fashioned but people could catch buses, change buses and get off buses - right next to the biggest train station in Wales.

I'm going to quote you in an article I'm writing on the matter.

Hope this helps.

The writer suggest that the new bus/train interchange should have been the priority in developing this area, rather than an inconvenience.

If a bus station is built that allows people to catch buses to places in Cardiff and beyond, and which allows people to arrive at Cardiff Central to catch a train - y'know, like what was there until recently - then we can all be happy.

Until that comes to fruition then I'm afraid that we are facing a, frankly, embarassing and damaging situation as Wales capital city.

My kids use Cardiff buses every day, I doubt they've ever laid eyes on the bus station.

Who the hell uses this old relic?
