An application has been put in for a 3 storey building in Caroline Street - restaurant on ground floor with flats above. This is for the site that has been empty for at least 25 years if not more.

There is an online petition to try and save (at least the facade) of the Splott University Settlement building in, er, Splott. This was the subject of debate on this forum a few months ago when the application to demolish the building was first made.

The building is one of the most impressive left in Splott and it would be a massive shame to see it go. If you feel strongly enough the link to the petition is below -

There's long piece about the building by Piloti in the current Private Eye describing it as "a rare work by a distinguished architect... of great importance to the social history of Cardiff." He describes the reasons given by the WG for refusing to list it as "untenable, not to say fatuous."

Karl has missed out an 'h' at the start of his link - try this one instead!

It may be one of the most impressive historic structures remaining in Splott. But to be honest, I don't find it that impressive. The one facade is OK but the others are nothing special at all. And early 20th century buildings, including arts and crafts styled ones, are not exactly that rate. So it doesn't seem worthy of listing on its architectural grounds to me. Perhaps if its the only University Settlement building remaining in Wales there is a case for listing on social or historical grounds, but I don't know. Just what is a university settlement? What social or historical role did they play?

Have we seen designs for the replacement building? Are they an overdevelopment? Are they bland or poorly designed?

Some of the plans are on the planning website application number 14/02886/MJR although I'm not sure if this is the must up-to-date version as several revisions have been made. Quite a few objection comments concerning the loss of the building and also perceived over development and lack of parking (36 flats with only 10 parking spaces).

I was told that part of the building was damaged or destroyed due to WW2 bombing but not sure if that is true due to lack of other damage in the immediate area.
