210 Bed Hotel Cardiff Bay

PostSun Apr 17, 2016 10:35 am

When having a look at some recent planning applications, I came across a new one for a 210 bed hotel in Pierhead Street opposite the Millennium Centre, adjacent to the multi-storey car park.

http://planning.cardiff.gov.uk/online-a ... APR_115546

From the documents provided with the application, I can see that it is a Premier Inn & will be developed in phases with possible office buildings to follow.

Thoughts?

Here's the site Plan and elevations.

Could it be a "wind tunnel" between this and Mill. centre? Not entirely convinced by the elevation......

We found this one about a month ago I think. I don't mind it too much, but would prefer the portholes to be less "regular". The pattern is too repetitive.

I don't think either building is big enough to cause a wind tunnel. The Millennium Centre is rounded too, so wouldn't force the wind through that street very much. There's also a decent distance between them.

The previous discussion on this is in the 'general developments' thread.

It's better than some of the stuff around it, particularly the vile Scott Harbour offices - still not great though.

Unless I'm mistaken, this appears to be a revision of the Plot 5 of Cardiff Waterside:

Which means that the building shown below is going to be axed.

I think that's a shame. I think more needs to be done to cement the Bay's position as Cardiff's 2nd city centre. So I'm all in favour of more office developments. I'm also concerned that we'll end up with an oversupply of hotels in Cardiff and I would hate to see this development scupper plans for the Coal Exchange.

Premier Inn is unlikely to be competing for the same customers as the planned Coal Exchange. And Cardiff is more likely to have an oversupply of office space than hotels in the near future.

Some renders of the hotel have appeared on Wales Online that I don't think we've seen before...

I think it might grow on me. At least it's not boring and generic like the other budget hotels in the Bay!

I do think it would look better if the windows were less regular in size and lay-out.

Clearly going for the "ocean going liner look" with all those portholes and what looks like rivets?
