I quite like that, it'll fit in nicely with any mid-rises that appear in the Dumballs Road area (if that ever happens).

There is an application in for the part demolition/part refurbishment of 5-10 Church Street (the red brick shithole that is mostly empty at the moment but used to house Poundstretchers).

The link to the DAS is here

http://planning.cardiff.gov.uk/online-a ... 786961.pdf

For those who can't access the link the planning app is 16/00946/MJR

The plans don't look that exciting although they represent an improvement of the existing (how could they not)? The materials will be crucial. The architects are Holder Mathias.

You know those of us who really care about quality should comment on these applications directly as well as moan on here. At the moment applications seem to get approved with little or no public scrutiny when comments must be taken into consideration.... If all of us on here got involved maybe officers would at least have to address the points we raise?

That's a big improvement and looks fine as long as it's not a render finish! Looks like a similar finish to SD2, as long as it's not render then all will be ok.

I imagine it will be marketed to restaurants primarily, a nice setting by St. John's church too, can imagine lots of outside tables for al fresco dining during the summer (i.e. a week in May).

Some interesting applications in the eastern burbs.

163 homes in St Mellons near to the shopping precinct. A mix of flats and houses with 58 affordable and the rest on the open market.

106 homes in Llanrumney near Braunton Crescent.

Both of these schemes appear to be connected to a joint venture between the Council and Wates Living Space - the Housing Partnership Programme (HPP).

Other area's earmarked for development under the HPP scheme are Allensbank Rd, Llanishen, Ely, Briardene in Gabalfa and Llandudno Rd in Rumney.

The plans for both the St Mellons and Llanrumney schemes look quite good. High density and straighforward design with what appears to be good materials.

Some further info on the HPP for anyone who is interested -

These schemes are many more times importnat, in my view, than the proposed student towers which gather the most column inches in our local rag.

I can see why the HPP needs to use land already owned by the council in order to work but that does mean a lot of new social housing being built in existing council estates.

Obviously anything that helps with the supply of affordable homes is welcome - but it's not great for social cohesion if the bulk of the new builds are in poorer parts of the city.
