Totally agree! That could have been something special and I know quite a number of people who have said the very same thing.

What is it with Cardiff and bridges? Umpteen bridges over the Taff,Rhymney and Ely and none to write home about. Umpteen railway bridges and pretty much all of them shit. Even Newport has a few decent bridges, including the iconic Transporter Bridge.

Being from Newport myself, I think that's the one thing that we have got right. It's a shame the river they go over looks crap, we would definitely benefit from a barrage.

I would love to see a barrage for Newport - the river in the city centre would be very significant if permanently at 'high tide' level. More like the Thames than the Taff!

Of course I'm not knocking our marvelous river and it's great to see regular 'traffic' on it nowadays - my future wish for what happens at the brewery is a marina for part of the site.

There is an application for a 7 storey block of student accommodation at Cardiff Met's Cyncoed campus -

I fully expect the North Cardiff Nimby Machine to swing into action on this one.

An application in for student accommodation (what else) at Glossop Terrace aka Cardiff Infirmary West Wing -

http://planning.cardiff.gov.uk/online-a ... APR_117123

I can't make my mind up about this one. Perhaps my judgment is being coloured by my affection for the current building but I think this design is trying a bit hard. There seems to be a lot of different elements when perhaps less is more.

There is no doubt that the current building has an awful relationship with the street and this will at least remedy that. But the NEW building needs to interact properly with CRI, plus the very nice Victorian terracing immediately opposite in Moira Terrace and Howard Gardens.

Perhaps someone with better IT skills could upload the images from the DAS?

In general, I quite like it. I think its quite an interesting design, which avoids being too busy. Nice combination of brick, glass, metal etc.

The 4-storey element on Moira terrace won't be too overbearing in my view, as it faces 3 storey buildings (with pitched rooves), and is set back a bit from the road with planting outside (although that planting means it might appear a bit of a dead frontage). It then steps up to 7-storeys, which might be a little more overbearing - I'd push this element back a little bit more.

I think the 6 - 10 storey element on Newport Road lane is more problematic as might it overshadow the school next door too much?

Also, it looks like there is no on site parking at all, bar 3 disabled spaces and 7 regular spaces. I understand that students cannot expect to bring cars, and one can even write in conditions on it into tenancies (at my university we were banned from keeping a car within 10 miles!). But I think some students will flout this - having some more parking spaces available on a paid and first-come first-served basis would probably help avoid this causing parking nuisance to neighbours.

This looked like an interesting project but haven't seen much activity going on at the site for a while now. The work they did cleaning up old stone around the door looked promising but haven't seen much since then. Has the project stalled? Or have I just missed the comings and goings. With the 2 new approved student accommodation sites nearby was wondering what the status was. Would be a shame if it has stalled but always struggled seeing it working as luxury apartments. Any news?

I had also wondered about this project Glenn. I haven't noticed any activity on the site in months. Also, I'm pretty sure that there were previously hoardings around the church showing images of the development. These are no longer there. All in all this isn't looing too promising, which is a shame as it looked like it was going to be a really nice conversion.
