It's just the first lift. They're placing it to ensure the anchors are cast-in correctly and they have the right verticality on the rest of the tower.

Making it Cardiffs tallest building by a coupla foot! I believe Capital Tower is 80metres. Now if Herbert Street tower gets underway in April then Charles St won't hold the 'title' for long as I think it is now to be 82metres. I'm hopeful that the tower at central square will be taller 90+ metres? and then of course if the one at Hope St comes off at 132.5 metres it can snigger at the rest!! mind you that one at the Brains site looked pretty lofty? Also at the ISV, Bayscape Phase 2 which looks like it's 100+ metres? - Of course the great thing about the Charles St tower is that it is actually under construction!

Sorry to derail the thread into a city vs. city competition (!!!) but following on from Paul's post about the raft of proposals, are other UK cities aside from London (obviously) and Manchester (where there are also some large, high-rise buildings taking shape) seeing the same number of proposals and levels of construction as Cardiff is? It can be hard to get a proper summary with all the various subforums on Skyscrapercity!

The city is growing pretty fast population-wise so I'm assuming that that is reflected in current construction activity? Are cities like Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, Newcastle, Portsmouth and Leicester seeing such development?

Birmingham has huge construction schemes, the development of their former library is probably larger than central square scheme, also they have a large development around centenary square with anchor tenant HSBC. They also have a few tall buildings under construction and i would say are slightly ahead of Cardiff in overall terms, with proposal for HS2 etc likely to majorly more significant than anything in Cardiff. They also have had some large schemes completed recently like th e station and John Lewis (which is larger than Cardiffs).

The other cities not so much, Leeds seems to be mainly focused around retail recently, and the others are mostly at proposal stage as far as i can see.

Manchester is really kicking off! There are a lot of high-rise developments either underway or in the pipeline. This "Northern Powerhouse" seems to be a lot more than a political soundbite, with a huge number of financial and creative media jobs. There's also a lot of activity gaining pace in Liverpool, particularly around the old docks, with a few billion pounds being spent.

Bristol seems to be lagging behind to me. There are a noteable schemes underway, but those seem to be taking years to come to fruition and nothing like the scale of the proposals for Cardiff. There have been some recent announcement around the Temple Meads area, but these are the sort of devepements that have been spoken about for years. I did hear recenetly that Bristol wants to abondon its anti-tall-buildings policy and permit developments over 60m (current limit). I've also heard that some off the back of that policy shift is thinking of a 40-odd-storey development, but nothing for certain.
