Hey, that looks very, very nice.

I particularly like the bit in the design statement where the architects slag off the surrounding buildings for their cheap construction and shoddy aesthetics.

It's a fair old size isn't it ? I like the fact it's a different colour to most of the buildings around it. I'm so bored of all the white buildings in the city.

I like the view from Central station in particular. I also like all the verified view images in the documents, they really give you an idea of how big it is in relation to the rest if the city.

I wonder of it'll get through planning at that height though? Is it a ploy to at least get something through above 30 floors?

I'm not getting too excited though, we've seen other talls go as far as planning, although admittedly these guys have some form and actually building.

Read page 22 of the Design and Access Statement: "There was an excitment by both WJG and Cardiff COuncil at this stage to develop the tallest building in Wales on this site."

The Lloyd George Avenue photo is minus the 21 storey JR Smart offering.

LGA may be a decent drive up toward town in a few years, certainly an impressive one (with eyes front of course)

Very interesting on page 49 of Design and Access....

"Viewing Area
The proposals will include for space on the three most upper floors of
the building which can be available for managed private functions, but
which will be used as student communal rooms at other times (and
indeed the majority of the time). The inclusion of this facility has
developed following feedback from the council and the Design
Commission for Wales at the early stages of the design process, and a
desire to provide a facility which may be used by public within such an
important building in Cardiff.
The operation of this facility will need to be tightly managed in order to
comply with the requirements of the Building Regulations and the safe
means of escape of occupants.
It is therefore intended that the allocated spaces will be open to the
wider community in a ‘pre-planned function’ scenario rather than
allowing free unmanaged access.
The private function spaces are located at levels 39, 40 and 41 and will
afford unparalleled views over Cardiff, across Cardiff Bay to Penarth Head
and also to the wider landscape of Radyr, Caerphilly, Newport and the
Southern Welsh valleys.
The spaces will be large enough to cater for groups of up to 50 people at
any one time. Access to the spaces will be controlled by the reception
and management staff who will accompany the groups between the
ground floor reception and viewing spaces."

That's a great idea - not quite a viewing platform or restaurant but great to know that those of us that are interested in such tall buildings should at some stage get to sample that 'tallest building in Wales experience'

I must say, I'm really not sure about the dark cladding. I think it could look quite oppressive, especially on cloudy and wet days. It won't blend that well with surrounding buildings and will be too prominent visually in my view. Now I know that cheap white render does not age well. But white metal cladding, and paler stone-style or ceramic cladding agres pretty well. And would go much better in my view.

I just worry that this could end up looking quite bulky and dark on the skyline (despite its quite small footprint), rather than slim, slender and attractive.

Well, I must say, that looks bloody fantastic. Much better than the one they originally showed. The staggered design also breaks up the impact of the building on the skyline and doesn't make the other buildings seem as small. Can't wait for this to go up!

I find the white buildings (including ones with better material) quite bit depressing on cloudy days, particularly because we have so many. I guess the dark colour could have the same issue as well, although I prefer this purely because it's a different colour and I really do want to see a variety of colour in our skyline.

Thanks for pointing out that, quite a positive thing isn't it? I didn't get time to read it last night, only looked at the pretty pictures
