I'm unable to comment on the poets corner prior to 2012 but after spending 2 years living in the flats opposite, it's hardly surprising this place has closed. A week didn't go by without us having a letter under the door asking if we had witnessed a break in or an assault. It's a shame because the building itself is a gem. It also didn't help its image having 4-5 horses at a time tied up out front most afternoons. Let's hope a development of worth is put in its place!

The wharf is shutting in June. JR Smart are the new owners, so guessing plans will be submitted for new building/s in the near future.

It's a pity - despite being less than thirty years old I suspect the building will be demolished to make way for something far more bulky. The Wharf was never a great pub but the buildings are well-designed and attractive. The place suffered from being designed as the centrepiece of a development that never really took off - as the converted retail units further up the dock attest.

Sometimes these things work - and sometimes they don't.

That's a shame as it's not an unattractive building g and does fit in with the wharf. It's also a half decent pub, certainly whenever I've been in there (which isn't often admittedly)

The Philharmonic has been sold to Curzon Real Estate, so we can expect some developments there pretty soon:

There is an application from Bristol based Big Beer Company to open a bar branded as 'Small Bar' in the Church Street unit formerly occupied by Applejacks.

On their website they have one Small Bar in Bristol that concentrates on craft beers etc. Cardiff would be the second outlet. It also looks like the people behind it were previously at Brewdog.

Church St and St Johns Square will now be almost totally food and drink led. Perhaps it could be branded in a similar way to Mill Lane ?

IMHO, the whole city centre is going that way.

Strong rumours that The Golden Cross is to become a Coffee#1 (both owned by Brains of course). The current tenants have a short term lease.

If true, would be interesting to see what they do with it considering its listed status.

I'm not that clued up on the Wood Street development but is it possible the Coffee#1 has to close soon as part of it?

Coffee No I are opening an outlet on the ground floor of the Principlaity building (new one) in the Friary. I thought that was a replacement for the Wood Street branch which will go when Marland House is destroyed just weeks from now.

I can't see a Coffee No 1 (or any coffee shop) working there. Not much footfall. Callaghan Square is around the corner I suppose but thats about it. Also it's a grade 2 listed building - can Brains be arsed getting all the consents, sensitively refurbing etc when they can pick and choose any number of empty units in the city centre where they will have carte blanche to do what they want?

In other news the Flora is having a six figure makeover. It's going to be shabby chic. FFS. When will there be a trend for Victorian era street corner boozers? Brass fittings, wood pannelled bars, etched glass, tiled floors? God knows what a shabby chic makeover will result in. A sub-Juno Lounge abortion most probably.

Really? It is on the doorstep to multiple hotels and major apartment blocks, not to mention the upcoming student accommodation block opposite.
